Regina Schmeken: Geschlossene Gesellschaft Photographien 1989-1993

German photographer Regina Schmecken, a photojournalist for the South German newspaper, photographed Germany and its neighboring countries from 1989 to 1993. 1989 was the year of the fall of the Berlin Wall, one of the most important events in German history, and it was followed by the reunification of Germany in 1990. The film documents the turbulent four years leading up to the reunification of Germany in 1990.
The 71 black-and-white works in the exhibition, entitled "Closed Society," do not seek to focus on anything, but rather on the incidentals of history and the shadows of current events themselves. A car being repossessed or an old woman spreading a newspaper on a train. This subjective, objective view of history, while being a valuable source of information, encompasses the feelings of a single German, blurring the boundary between the "outside" and the "inside" of the photograph. Did the fall of the wall shed light on the shadows of people's hearts and minds beyond its material meaning?

ドイツの女性写真家、レギーナ・シュメッケンは、南ドイツ新聞のフォトジャーナリストとして1989年から1993年までのドイツ、そしてその周辺国を撮影した。1989年といえばドイツ史における最も重要な出来事の一つであるベルリンの壁崩壊の年であり、そして1990年のドイツ再統一へとつながっていく、激動の4年間を記録したドキュメントである。
「閉ざされた社会」と題されたこの展示の彼女のモノクロ作品71点は、何かに焦点に求めることは決してなく、歴史のおける付随的なものや、時事問題の影そのものがモチーフとなっている。回収される車や、電車の中で新聞を広げる老婆。主観的な視点で歴史を客観視したその姿勢は、貴重な資料でありながら、一人のドイツ人としての心情を包み込み、写真の「外」と「中」の境界を曖昧にさせる。壁の崩壊は、物質的な意味に留まらず、人々の心の影に光を差し込んだのだろうか。
